Touring Ourselves

To the tune of Fooling Yourself, written by Tommy Shaw
Dennis, Relax! Take it easy!
You see the band through tyrannical eyes.
You're a troubled man now, I can tell.
You had us all in the palm of your hand
But your faced swelled with sweat
And you needed a rest
So we're Touring Ourselves
And you best believe it!
Enjoying ourselves
And you best believe it!
Why must you be such a cranky old man
When our future looks quite bright to me?
So what if you're not a part of that plan?
See, you're only one man
And now I run the band!
So, we're Touring Ourselves
And you best believe it!
We're singing YOUR songs!
And you best believe it!
Get out! (Get out!)
Start movin' those feet!
'Cause I've got you beat
And you know it!
Move on! (Move on!)
Go do your own show!
But you've GOT to go
So don't blow it!
Blow- woah woah oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh!
And we're Touring Ourselves
And you best believe it!
We're CRANKIN' your songs!
And you get no credit!
Get out! (Get out!)
You showed up too late!
And Gowan is great
So get movin'!
Move on! (Move on!)
We've seen what you got!
And this line-up's hot
So you blew it!
Blew -ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew!

Interpretation
It all started with the release of Brave New World. Tommy Shaw and James Young wanted to release the album in the summer of 1999 and immediately tour to support the album. Dennis DeYoung was suffering from a mysterious illness that baffled doctors and left him unable to tour. He also wanted more time to finish the album. The album was released that summer over Dennis' objections, and the band went on the road with Lawrence Gowan filling in for Dennis and Glen Burtnik returning to fill in for Chuck Panozzo, who had previously decided to retire. Rumors started surfacing on the Internet, interviews and on-line chats with band members revealed conflicting and changing stories. Flame wars erupted on the various Styx e-mail lists as the fans polarized over the band's internal issues. Meanwhile, the Styx tour continued without Dennis, whose health improved enough to begin a highly-acclaimed solo tour with a 50-piece orchestra. This parody takes an exaggerated, comical view of what Tommy might want to say to Dennis in a moment of frustration. Of course, the real situation is not funny at all.
