The Band's Confusion
Written by Alan
To the tune of The Grand Illusion, written by Dennis DeYoung

Welcome to the Band's Confusion!
Get online and read what's happening!
Pay the price for a Styx or Dennis show!
The screen is lit.
The fans start flaming.
Suddenly your heart is pounding,
Typing angrily, "You've gone too far!"

But don't be fooled by the - things they know:
The gossip leaping off your screen.
Tell you all about - just how the band should be.
But that's just someone's private fantasy.

So if you think that Dennis
Needs a bruisin'
Or that the new band's really lame,
Just remember that
It's the Band's Confusion.
It doesn't matter who we blame!
Who we blame! (Blame. Blame. Blame. Blame!)

So if you think that Gowan's - not your choosin',
Or that De Young's become a pain,
Just remember that
It's the Band's Confusion.
It doesn't matter who we blame!

The Band is in a competition!
But don't get out your ammunition!
Maybe no one's right and no one's wrong!

But someday soon we'll stop to ponder,
What's this dark rain cloud they're under?
Styx may be great but still we wonder,
"Can't they get along?"

Interpretation

It all started with the release of Brave New World. Tommy Shaw and James Young wanted to release the album in the summer of 1999 and immediately tour to support the album. Dennis DeYoung was suffering from a mysterious illness that baffled doctors and left him unable to tour. He also wanted more time to finish the album. The album was released that summer over Dennis' objections, and the band went on the road with Lawrence Gowan filling in for Dennis and Glen Burtnik returning to fill in for Chuck Panozzo, who had previously decided to retire. Rumors started surfacing on the Internet, interviews and on-line chats with band members revealed conflicting and changing stories. Flame wars erupted on the various Styx e-mail lists as the fans polarized over the band's internal issues. Meanwhile, the Styx tour continued without Dennis, whose health improved enough to begin a highly-acclaimed solo tour with a 50-piece orchestra. This parody echoes the sentiments of the majority of on-line fans, which is to leave internal conflicts alone as private issues within the band, and try to make the best of the situation by enjoying the memories, 30 years of great music, an energetic Styx world tour and highly-acclaimed Dennis DeYoung tour.
