Parodies & Tributes

Mr. Tommy Shaw
Written by Alan
To the tune of Miss America, written by James Young

You were the apple of the groupies' eye
As you cut the title track on "Crystal Ball."
"Hot Damn!" We sure made a fuss!
"Curlewski with appeal!"

They love your body and your photographs!
Your chatrooms sure draw a crowd!
The PRINCE - of Styx! But not enough!
You made the King step down!

Well, aren't you - Mr. Tommy Shaw?
And you don't - need an orchestra!
Well, aren't you - Mr. Tommy Shaw, our love?

Well, are you really who should be the boss?
I've been in Styx since "Styx One" was laid down.
But I don't - care WHO'S in charge,
Just so I'M still around!

If it's true - that Dennis has
A disease for which there is no cure,
As long as I can sing two songs,
Hell, TODD could be the boss!

But it's YOU, Mr. Tommy Shaw!
Drink your bath? Sure, you got a straw?
'Cause it's you! - Mr. Tommy Shaw, our love!

Mr. Tommy Shaw!
Mr. Tommy Shaw!
Mr. Tommy Shaw!
Mr. Tommy Shaw!
Mr. Tommy Shaw!

Well, aren't you - Mr. Tommy Shaw?
And don't you - love to be the draw?
Well, aren't you - Mr. Tommy Shaw, our love?

Well, it's true! I thought it stank
When you ran off with those Damn Yanks!
And old Dennis, would he ever think
To let ME sing your songs?

At least now - I sing "Lorelei",
And I sound as SWEET - as D.D.Y.!
Poor Glen - with one song, gets by,
His glory days forgotten!

But not you! - Mr. Tommy Shaw!
Was Ted Nu - Gent as fun as moi?
You're the TRUE - Mr. Tommy Shaw, our love!

Mr. Tommy Shaw!
Mr. Tommy Shaw!
Mr. Tommy Shaw!
Mr. Tommy Shaw!
Mr. Tommy Shaw!
Mr. Tommy Shaw!
Mr. Tommy Shaw!
Mr. Tommy Shaw!
Mr. Tommy Shaw!

Interpretation

It all started with the release of Brave New World. Tommy Shaw and James Young wanted to release the album in the summer of 1999 and immediately tour to support the album. Dennis DeYoung was suffering from a mysterious illness that baffled doctors and left him unable to tour. He also wanted more time to finish the album. The album was released that summer over Dennis' objections, and the band went on the road with Lawrence Gowan filling in for Dennis and Glen Burtnik returning to fill in for Chuck Panozzo, who had previously decided to retire. Rumors started surfacing on the Internet, interviews and on-line chats with band members revealed conflicting and changing stories. Flame wars erupted on the various Styx e-mail lists as the fans polarized over the band's internal issues. Meanwhile, the Styx tour continued without Dennis, whose health improved enough to begin a highly-acclaimed solo tour with a 50-piece orchestra. This parody has JY serenading Tommy Shaw with endless references to specifics of the situation.
