Parodies & Tributes

Lawrence Gowan
Written by Bob (Aku Aku) Young
To the tune of Ballerina, written by Dennis DeYoung

It seems we finally had to choose
I guess there was no other way
Between Dennis' and Larry's shoes
But why we do we'll never say

It all began so long ago
That the memory's hardly clear
We had hits, but this we know
We've more fun with Leroy here

Lawrence Gowan when you dance to the music
Zan's eye's lights illuminate your movement
Rosie dreams of pumping your organ again

Lawrence Gowan from the first we knew that
You're no Dennis but water from the bath
But you rock & dance & move & make us go
To show after show.

Dance for me, I beg of you, thrust for me
Dance for me, Lawrence Gowan, dance for me

Lawrence Gowan when you dance there's music
Zan's eye's lights illuminate your movement
County fairs anticipate your gentle smile

La la la la la la la la...
Woa Woa...

Interpretation

When Lawrence Gowan first replaced Dennis DeYoung on the 1999 summer tour, Styx fans were struck by the difference in Gowan's very active style on stage. This parody takes a look at the stir that Gowan made to fans on the Styx Bulletin Board at the official web site. By the way, Leroy is a nickname that the guys in Styx sometimes would call Gowan, although he hates the name. Also, the organ-pumping reference is based on a joke that JY or Tommy would make on stage at the concerts about the Harmonium that Gowan would play during the acoustic set. The reference to "county fairs" reflects the venues that Styx was playing during that tour, which Dennis would often reference in interviews as evidence that Styx could not fill the big arenas without him.
