Just Give Up This Fight
Written by Zan
To the tune of Just Get Through This Night, written by Tommy Shaw
This could be the longest fight
in Stygian history
We never sleep (sleep sleep sleep sleep)
We just keep right on posting to the lists
with possiblilities...
Now I'm as crazed as the next fan
I don't care who's wrong or who's right,
and I would give a million cheers
if we'd just give up this fight.
Whoooooaaa whooooaaaaaooooooo
Some of us are novelists,
write posts long and absurd
Some poor souls
will take each and every sentence
and disect all the words.
It's no big secret we're "out there,"
and everybody knows it's Glen's fault
But why are we so cold, nasty and bitter
It just makes no sense at all...
Whoooaaaa whooooaaaaaoooooo...
Don't we know that Styx is the best band on Earth?
They're so much fun,
they're a great escape from pains
in our troubled hearts
If worshipping Styx was a crime,
we'd be doing time...whooaaaa
But it seems when we come here
It's all crazy and insane
and I don't know why...
(musical interlude)
We could be out doing things,
like normal people would,
but we sit compulsively obsessing
on keeping flames alive
(And we should)
Humbly thank our creator
for giving us all love in our hearts.
We could blow these guys away
if we'd only do our part...
Whhoooaaaaa...if we'd just give up this fight.
Oh whoaaaa...if we'd just...give...up...this...
Fiiiiiggghhhttt......

Interpretation
It all started with the release of Brave New World. Tommy Shaw and James Young wanted to release the album in the summer of 1999 and immediately tour to support the album. Dennis DeYoung was suffering from a mysterious illness that baffled doctors and left him unable to tour. He also wanted more time to finish the album. The album was released that summer over Dennis' objections, and the band went on the road with Lawrence Gowan filling in for Dennis and Glen Burtnik returning to fill in for Chuck Panozzo, who had previously decided to retire. Rumors started surfacing on the Internet, interviews and on-line chats with band members revealed conflicting and changing stories. Flame wars erupted on the various Styx e-mail lists as the fans polarized over the band's internal issues. Meanwhile, the Styx tour continued without Dennis, whose health improved enough to begin a highly-acclaimed solo tour with a 50-piece orchestra. This parody makes fun of the flame wars and other time wasted by people arguing over something that none of us can control.
