Groupie Wars
Written by Alan
To the tune of Superstars, written by James Young, Dennis DeYoung, Tommy Shaw

Styx and I
Told De Young Goodbye!
Now, there's Groupie Wars
'Cause of Styx and I.

I see you heard about it from the D.J.,
Read it in that interview.
You'd still sell your soul to come to every Styx show!
And you drink our bathwater too!

But don't think we've forgotten about Dennis
In his bell tower in Notre Dame!
But I've had the same dreams he has
And that's why he must be gone!
So we're moving on!

'Cause Styx and I
Found a brand new guy.
Now, there's Groupie Wars!
Woah, woah, Styx and I.

If you close your eyes,
You'll think Gowan's DDY!

Ha ha ha ha!
Groupie Wars! Yes, yes, Groupie Wars!
You know the way!
Every fan's welcome!
We want your drama!
The offer's simple:
Pick your favorite guy for all to see!

'Cause I've seen them all you know!
I've seen Curlewski climb and I've seen him fall!
I've seen Tommy come and I've seen him go!
And through it all, there's only one guy that matters: Me!

It's simply me- Uh, You and I!
Yes, you and I,
For I - I was in "Superstar!"

Styx and I
Say De Young, Goodbye!
Groupie Wars!
Styx and I -
Groupie Wars!
Say forget that guy!
Groupie Wars!

Interpretation

It all started with the release of Brave New World. Tommy Shaw and James Young wanted to release the album in the summer of 1999 and immediately tour to support the album. Dennis DeYoung was suffering from a mysterious illness that baffled doctors and left him unable to tour. He also wanted more time to finish the album. The album was released that summer over Dennis' objections, and the band went on the road with Lawrence Gowan filling in for Dennis and Glen Burtnik returning to fill in for Chuck Panozzo, who had previously decided to retire. Rumors started surfacing on the Internet, interviews and on-line chats with band members revealed conflicting and changing stories. Flame wars erupted on the various Styx e-mail lists as the fans polarized over the band's internal issues. Meanwhile, the Styx tour continued without Dennis, whose health improved enough to begin a highly-acclaimed solo tour with a 50-piece orchestra. This parody makes fun of the flame wars on the internet among opinionated fans. It also makes reference to one specific interview with Dennis DeYoung that was particularly divisive. The mention of drinking bathwater came from a quote from Dennis, who used that as a metaphor to dismiss the opinions of some die-hard internet fans. The reference to the bell tower at Notre Dame is obviously about Dennis' The Huncback of Notre Dame musical. Also, the "brand new guy" is clearly Gowan, since Glen was in Styx previously, replacing Tommy on the Edge Of The Century album and tour.
