Feeling Swell
Written by Zan
To the tune of Mademoiselle, written by Tommy Shaw
(It's swell out of Hell...oooh la laaaa)
Love the way tour's been going
We're feeling swell
Casinos and state fairs
great big hotels
We're doing shows
almost everyday
What da ya know...
It seems we're here to stay
We've been to islands in Japan
and New Year's Eve in Disneyland
It feels just like a dream
Would someone pinch me
I yell out, "HELLO!" (Hello...Hello)
(It's my thing to say)
Some fans drive through snow
just to come see us play
(We're so happy they came)
The choice I made was hard for me
and I know Dennis is cursing me
but I never realized
we'd have such a good time!!!
Love the way tour's been going
Life's sweet and swell
might even do Paris
and Montreal
And now with DeYoung far away
I thank sweet Jesus everyday
that we were able to break free
with a new energy...Ooohhh whoooaaa
we're feeling swell
we're feeling swell
we're feeling swell
oh my my my my my...
It's time
It's time
and oh..we're feeling fine...

Interpretation
It all started with the release of Brave New World. Tommy Shaw and James Young wanted to release the album in the summer of 1999 and immediately tour to support the album. Dennis DeYoung was suffering from a mysterious illness that baffled doctors and left him unable to tour. He also wanted more time to finish the album. The album was released that summer over Dennis' objections, and the band went on the road with Lawrence Gowan filling in for Dennis and Glen Burtnik returning to fill in for Chuck Panozzo, who had previously decided to retire. Rumors started surfacing on the Internet, interviews and on-line chats with band members revealed conflicting and changing stories. Flame wars erupted on the various Styx e-mail lists as the fans polarized over the band's internal issues. Meanwhile, the Styx tour continued without Dennis, whose health improved enough to begin a highly-acclaimed solo tour with a 50-piece orchestra. This parody is from Tommy's point of view as he reflects on how much fun he's having on the road with the Dennis-less Styx (perhaps part of the reason that Dennis did not rejoin the band on the road once his health improved, as originally planned).
