Dennis DeYoung Poisoning
Written by Bob (Aku Aku) Young
To the tune of Heavy Metal Poisoning, written by James Young

toN s'eH woN tuB ereH saW sinneD
What the devil's goin' on
Why don't your turn that ballad down
You're going 'Paul' and that's for sure
And all fans do is scream for more

We'll get you out and go for broke
We'll sing your songs, it's such a joke
How Tommy's 'nightmare' was to be
Back with us, but now he leads

Dennis DeYoung (Dennis DeYoung) was poisoning (he's a poison)
He got us success (got us success)
But too demanding (he's too demanding)
Overloaded (I'm overloaded), suffering (yeah!)
We can make it (we can make it) with Shaw and me, Shaw and me

Everything is black and white
You are wrong and we are right
First we'll cut ballads and then
We'll rock with Larry and with Glen

I'm Dr. Righteous (I'm Dr. Righteous), and I'm here to sing (yeah!)
Dennis DeYoung (Dennis DeYoung) was poisoning (poisoning)
With out him leading, we'd have quit when we were young
So now we'll make it (Yeah, we'll take it) from Dennis De, Tommy will
lead, and then we'll sing
The rock and roll!

I'm Dr. Righteous (I'm Dr. Righteous), I'm here to sing (yeah!)
That Dennis DeYoung (Dennis DeYoung) was poisoning (poisoning)
With out him leading, we may have quit when we were young
But now we'll make it (Yeah, we'll take it) from Dennis De, Tommy will
lead

Dennis DeYoung (Dennis DeYoung) was poisoning (he's a poison)
He got us success (he got us success)
But too demanding (too demanding)
Overloaded (I'm overloaded), suffering (yeah!)
We can make it (we can take it) from Dennis De, Tommy will lead, and we
will be, happy and free, but without his lead, can we make money, Oh
Dennis De
(From Tommy) "Shut up!"
(From fans) "...Dennis, Dennis, Dennis, Dennis, Dennis, Dennis! Yeah!"
"Shut up! Shut up!"

Interpretation

It all started with the release of Brave New World. Tommy Shaw and James Young wanted to release the album in the summer of 1999 and immediately tour to support the album. Dennis DeYoung was suffering from a mysterious illness that baffled doctors and left him unable to tour. He also wanted more time to finish the album. The album was released that summer over Dennis' objections, and the band went on the road with Lawrence Gowan filling in for Dennis and Glen Burtnik returning to fill in for Chuck Panozzo, who had previously decided to retire. Rumors started surfacing on the Internet, interviews and on-line chats with band members revealed conflicting and changing stories. Flame wars erupted on the various Styx e-mail lists as the fans polarized over the band's internal issues. Meanwhile, the Styx tour continued without Dennis, whose health improved enough to begin a highly-acclaimed solo tour with a 50-piece orchestra. This parody takes JY's perspective, or at least the demonized JY speculated by many of Dennis' fans. The reference to "Paul" is to Paul McCartney and the breakup of the Beatles, which happens to be Dennis' favorite group and biggest musical influence.
