Don't Break Away
Written by Alan
To the tune of Come Sail Away, written by Dennis DeYoung

I'm ailing today.
Somehow I've been cursed with a rare disease.
But I've got to break free-
Free to help the band that's in need of me.

In Styx, I'm the Captain.
I head the Board,
Produce all the albums -
I'm like the Lord!

So, I'll try,
Oh ME, I'll try,
To FIX their songs!

I let them run free!
Producing my own songs' my priority.
Their stuff isn't bad.
Just give me several months and I'll make it rad!

But they rushed out the album
Beneath my nose.
Forget Triple Platinum!
It did not make Gold!

Still I'll try
When we're on Tour,
To FIX their songs!

A gathering of A**holes
Appeared upon my phone!
They said, "We're going out on tour
And leaving you alone!"

I said, "Don't Break Away!
Don't Break Away!
Don't Break Away from me, lads!
Don't Break Away!
Don't Break Away!
Don't Break Away from me!"

"Don't Break Away!
Don't Break Away!
Don't Break Away from me, Tommy!
Don't Break Away!
Don't Break Away!
Don't Break Away from ME!"

I thought that they were A**holes
So it's no suprise,
They played small halls and county fairs!
We'll soon be serving fries!

"Don't Break Away!
Don't Break Away!
Don't Break Away from me, lads!
Don't Break Away!
Don't Break Away!
Don't Break Away from me!"

"Don't Break Away!
Don't Break Away!
Don't Break Away from me, Morons!
Don't Break Away!
Don't Break Away!
Don't Break Away from ME!"

Interpretation

It all started with the release of Brave New World. Tommy Shaw and James Young wanted to release the album in the summer of 1999 and immediately tour to support the album. Dennis DeYoung was suffering from a mysterious illness that baffled doctors and left him unable to tour. He also wanted more time to finish the album. The album was released that summer over Dennis' objections, and the band went on the road with Lawrence Gowan filling in for Dennis and Glen Burtnik returning to fill in for Chuck Panozzo, who had previously decided to retire. Rumors started surfacing on the Internet, interviews and on-line chats with band members revealed conflicting and changing stories. Flame wars erupted on the various Styx e-mail lists as the fans polarized over the band's internal issues. Meanwhile, the Styx tour continued without Dennis, whose health improved enough to begin a highly-acclaimed solo tour with a 50-piece orchestra. This parody looks at the issue from Dennis' point of view. Much of the content is based on statements that Dennis has made in interviews.
