Dear Darling (I'll Be There)
Written by Dennis DeYoung
Lead Vocals by Dennis DeYoung
Here I am
I'm alone in my room again
I play my records, and think of you
And all the changes that we've been through
Well, I know our love grows
I know it's true
Every time that I look at you
I want to tell you how much I care
But when I try to, the words aren't there
So I'm writing you a letter from my heart
With all the things I just can't say
Oh, Dear Darlin'
I'm in love with you
And I believe
Heaven must have sent you here to find me
Darlin'
I promise and I swear
You've got my love forever
Don't think twice--I'll be there
Oh, I'll be there when you want me
I'll be there when you need me
I'll be there
Here I am
Well, I'm dreaming of you again
The words come easy when you're not here
And all my feelings become so clear
That I'm sending you a letter from my heart
With all the things I just can't say
Oh, Dear Darlin'
I'm in love with you
And I believe
Heaven must have sent you here to find me
Darlin'
Oh, I promise and I swear
You've got my love forever
So don't think twice, and I'll be there
There when you want me
There when you need me
There when you call me
There when you're lonely
I'll be there

Interpretation
Here it is in Dennis' own words, from a January 1985 interview with Rockline!:
If you read all of these lyrics closely, you'll see that the same guy keeps popping up in all of them. In this song, he's saying, "Just because I'm not really good at vocalizing my feelings for you, doesn't mean I don't care about you, doesn't mean I don't love you."
He says, "It's hard for me to show emotion. But don't be fooled, my heart is open and you are the only one I really need." He's telling her that, and the guy's saying, "Why is it when I'm with you, I can't seem to tell you how I feel about you . So, since I can't, I'm gonna write it in a letter cause I figure, if I write it down, then every time you wonder, you can pick it up and look at it."
